Autonomous mobility is ideally suited to provide flexible solutions that blend seamlessly with existing networks to expand the scope of public transit and to better serve airports, universities, corporate campuses and planned communities, first or last kilometer services, either on demand or on a fixedroute basis, keeping our focus on what matters — moving passengers safely and seamlessly to their destination. At Transdev, we believe that the future of mobility includes autonomous mobility. We are already operating autonomous vehicles on closed sites and are also conducting many experiments on open roads.
Transdev’s mission is to become the leader in the operation of mobility services with fleets of autonomous and shared vehicles, ensuring safety of the operation and security of both the service and of the customer experience. Autonomous mobility services already enable to respond to numerous use cases: facilitate mobility in city centers or touristic sites, cover a private site or restricted access area, ensure transport to the nearest station or stop and offer night or off-peakhours service.
Our strategy is twofold: on the one hand to operate transport services with multi-OEM autonomous vehicles (2GetThere, EasyMile, Lohr, Navya…) since 2005; and on the other hand to develop our own Transdev technologies for supervision, on-board intelligence, connected infrastructure, customer applications etc. to ensure full safety and security and provide the best client experience.
Transdev’s shared autonomous transport expertise stretches over 2 million passengers transported and over 350,000 km covered since 2005, with projects around the world in Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and in the USA. Our objective is to operate commercial transport services with fleets of shared autonomous vehicles, fully-integrated into conventional transport networks, by the early 2020’s.
The “Rouen Normandy Autonomous Lab” is one of Transdev’s most-advanced full-size 3-year projects located in Rouen (Normandy, France): this €11 million-project foresees the first to last kilometer open-road shared autonomous transport service in the urban area and business district of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray. The experimental service, scheduled to start commercial operations for two years in the fall of 2018, will be the first full-scale open-road and on-demand autonomous transport service in Europe. It will be accessible using a real-time smartphone application for use on any of three pre-defined routes totaling 10.5 km with 17 stops, performed by four autonomous (Level 4) Renault ZOE electric cars and a Lohr i-Cristal electric shuttle. Transdev is convinced that such shared and collective autonomous transport services will develop faster than individual uses.
The six project partners of this project include: Caisse des Dépôts & Consignations, Matmut, Métropole Rouen Normandie, Région Normandie, Renault, and Transdev – as project coordinator.
Transdev, a leading global provider of mobility services, is continuing the development and the deployment of sustainable solutions in line with its vision of mobility dubbed PACE: Personalized, Autonomous, Connected and Electric.
Personalized mobility is illustrated by the development of intelligent solutions for Transport on Demand, designed to offer to passengers the solutions closest to their needs, promote modal shift and improve mobility for all. These new offers have already been deployed throughout the Group: in France, in the Netherlands, in the USA and in Australia.
Transdev is actively working on the deployment of solutions enabling the advent of autonomous mobility within the frame of transport network operations. It is the objective of the agreements and projects launched by the Group and its industrial partners Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance & Lohr and with local communities, with the creation of the Rouen Normandy Autonomous Lab in France.
In terms of connected mobility, which allows passengers to design each step of their trip using all available means of transport, including ticketing, Transdev has launched a number of experiments in France and in the Netherlands.
Finally, Transdev plays a pioneering role in making energy transition a reality in its field with the deployment of environmentally friendly electric mobility solutions. Transdev now operates close to 400 electric buses and minibuses in operation at 27 sites in seven countries. Transdev is the largest operator of electric buses in Europe, with its contracts in Amsterdam and Eindhoven, two of the cleanest bus networks in the world.
