Blackburn bus driver Carly Broadley’s a knockout success when it comes to raising money for the fight against cancer – and for her, it’s personal.
30 year old Carly, who drives buses across East Lancashire from Transdev’s Intack depot in Blackburn, lost two family members to cancer.
In their memory, Carly decided to step into the ring for an eight week training programme ahead of her first ever boxing bout – and she won, raising hundreds of pounds for Cancer Research UK.
I took part in an Ultra White Collar Boxing event after training at the PwrBox Boxing Gym on Whalley New Road in Blackburn. I was nervous and felt out of place at first, as doing something like this really took me out of my comfort zone, but I was ready to fight the battle.
Cancer Research holds a very special place in my heart, as I’ve lost loved ones along the way – I’ve wanted to do something special to raise money for Cancer Research UK for a long time and this just seemed like a great opportunity to do it.
My managers at work, Imtiaz Gire and Frank Stanisauskis, gave me so much help and support in making sure I could get to training every week. Over the eight weeks of training, I did my first ever 5k run and lost nearly a stone in weight!
I ended up raising £673 and I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who sponsored me. I would 100 percent recommend anyone to try it. I made lots of new friends and was trained by an amazing guy called Berny Coupe – it’s been a once in a lifetime experience.

Carly’s done brilliantly to take this challenge on and come out a winner at the end of it.
We knew from the outset how much doing this meant to Carly, and we were all determined to do whatever we could to support her. Some of our team were at ringside to cheer her on.
We’re all very proud of Carly – when it comes to helping a very good cause, she never throws in the towel!
