Transdev selected as preferred bidder to operate Melbourne, Australia, bus network

The seven-year 950 million euro contract, which could rise to 1.41 billion euros through a possible three-year extension, covers operations for 30% of Melbourne’s bus network.

Transdev will manage 50 lines, 1,000 employees and 500 vehicles in the western and eastern areas of the city.

Transdev will offer travelers additional services including new Sunday service on some lines, simplification of the current network and extended operating hours on weekdays and weekends.

Transdev, present in Australia / New Zealand for 15 years and the continent’s third largest urban bus operator, has grown more than 25% in the last two years with contract wins in Sydney, Perth and Auckland.

Transport modes currently managed by the Group include bus networks in Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, commuter trains in Auckland, ferries in Brisbane and Sydney and monorail and tram services in Sydney. It also provides transport for employees of industrial clients through its Vivo Connect brand. Transdev transports approximately 86 million passengers annually in Australia with a fleet of 1,300 vehicles, managed by more than 3,600 employees.

The Melbourne contract makes Transdev Australia’s and Australasia’s leading private bus operator, with over 4,700 employees and revenues of about 600 million Australian dollars, or nearly 475 million euros.

The contract follows other recent wins including contract renewal for the Grenoble network (April 22, 2013) and the Shenyang, China, network won jointly with RATP Dev (April 24, 2013). Grenoble, operated by Transdev since 1975, and Shenyang, China’s first modern tramway, demonstrate the soundness of the strategic choices made by Transdev’s new leadership team.
