Verkehrsgesellschaft Idar-Oberstein mbH (ViO) has successfully extended the existing transit contract in Idar-Oberstein in Germany. ViO will operate the city bus services in Idar-Oberstein for an extension of 19 months from January 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022 in the Rhine-Nahe local public transportation system. This will be followed by a network redesign in the Birkenfeld district including the city of Idar-Oberstein.

The contract covers the urban area of Idar-Oberstein including the districts of Idar, Oberstein, Göttschied, Tiefenstein, Algenrodt, Rilchenberg and Regulshausen. More than 10 busses and around 30 employees are needed on the seven lines to cover the approximately 600,000 bus kilometers per year.

Since 2002, we have operated the city transit system in the gemstone city on a commercial basis. We are delighted to have won the tender, which means that we will continue to provide our passengers with transportation until the planned line network harmonization in August 2022. In the subsequent invitation to tender for scheduled services in the city of Idar-Oberstein and the Birkenfeld district, we will be fighting for our location and jobs.

Jürgen Weber, Managing Director of VIO Verkehrsgesellschaft Idar-Oberstein mbH
