Transdev’s light rail service in Barcelona (TRAM) made 20.4 million journeys in 2021, 27.36% more than in 2020, which was the first year that mobility was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. To be more specific, 20,386,159 journeys were made; 14,026,700 on Trambaix (with an increase of 26.63%), and 6,359,459 on Trambesòs (with a rise of 28.99%).
The figures obtained over the last year show that the tram service is recovering passenger numbers after the pandemic’s worst months and that public transit journeys is progressively returning to normal in the Barcelona Metropolitan Region.
TRAM closed 2019 with almost 30 million annual journeys and with an upward trend, considering that since 2013 fare validations have increased annually by more than one million up to this last year. Since TRAM started operating in 2004, 400,934,393 tram journeys have been made.
The Trambaix network, with three lines (T1, T2 and T3) and 29 stops, has made more than 272.7 million journeys since it came into operation. The Trambesòs network, also with three lines (T4, T5 and T6) and 27 stops, has made more than 128.2 million journeys.
The Trambaix network came into service on 3 April 2004 and the Trambesòs network on 8 May of the same year. The number of journeys made by TRAM has grown steadily since it came into service, with the sole exception of 2010 and 2012, due to the severe economic crisis, and in 2020 and 2021 due to the global COVID-19 crisis.
