Transdev Germany’s rail subsidiary in the Rhein-Ruhr area in the western part of the country has been awarded a five-year contract to operate S-Bahn Line 7 Wuppertal – Remscheid -Solingen on behalf of VRR, the regional public transit authority.

The contract, which covers approximately 1.4 million train kilometers per year, involves one of the lines in North Rhine-Westphalia formerly operated by Abellio Rail, which had to be re-awarded at short notice following the insolvency of the operator at the beginning of 2022.

Following the emergency award to VIAS Rail, the regular invitation to tender was issued in which Transdev came out as the winner. The transportation contract will initially run until December 2028 with an option to extend to 2031. Diesel railcars will be used, which will be provided by the VRR public transit authority and will run every 20 minutes.

This is a first major success for us ! Since we will have to hand over some of our previously operated lines at the end of 2025, this is a clear signal of departure for the employees and our new RheinRuhrBahn. We are therefore confident that we will be able to win other upcoming tenders in VRR.
